The challenge was to design an experience that could use AI to provide immediate help while still encouraging students to understand the problem, follow the reasoning, and ask questions when they get stuck.

Because homework is often written on paper, image upload is a core input method in ScanSolve.
Rather than forcing students to manually type complex equations or questions, they can simply point their camera at their notes, take a picture, and ScanSolve takes it from there.
ScanSolve also supports text input and document upload.

Answer to a Question
Answer to a Question
The Homework and Tutor sections in ScanSolve are designed to be interrelated, allowing a student to move seamlessly from receiving an answer to being tutored through the steps and solution.
When a student asks or uploads a question through Homework, the primary input field on the landing page, they are immediately provided with a concise answer suitable for completing their homework.
A student can then choose to ask a follow-up question. In these cases, the entire history of the question and answer is carried over to Tutor. Our research showed that students who ask follow-up questions are often looking for a deeper explanation and better understanding of the topic.

In collaboration with the engineering team, we designed Tutor's approach to answering questions around four sections:
An Intro: This always included a simple, relatable analogy to introduce the concept.
The Answer: A simplified, step-by-step solution to the student's question.
An Image: This section was optional. Where necessary, Tutor provided an image to aid understanding.
A Follow-up Question: Tutor always concluded with a simple follow-up question to encourage the student to respond and help assess their understanding.

Subscription Plans
Subscription Plans
The upgrade screen features the two plans offered by ScanSolve (the weekly and semester plans) side by side. This allows users to easily compare the offerings and choose the plan that best suits their needs.
A 7-day free trial is offered with the semester plan to encourage users to commit to a longer-term subscription. This creates a win-win: users receive the added value of a free trial, while ScanSolve benefits from increased long-term subscriptions.

Switching Subscription Plan
Switching Subscription Plan
I worked with the engineering team to design the logic behind switching between plans, with the goal of making the experience fair for students while also encouraging longer-term commitment.
A student on the Weekly plan can switch to the Semester plan at any time. Rather than immediately replacing the existing subscription and losing the remaining days of the weekly plan, the Semester plan is queued and automatically takes effect once the student's current weekly subscription expires. This ensures students get the full value of the plan they've already paid for while giving them the flexibility to commit to a longer-term plan whenever they're ready.
This also made business sense. When students are actively enjoying and getting value from ScanSolve, they can commit to a longer-term subscription in that moment rather than having to wait until their current plan expires and potentially losing the motivation to return and subscribe later.

Getting Support From Loved Ones
Getting Support From Loved Ones
I designed a feature that allows students to request subscription support from family and loved ones directly from the ScanSolve paywall.
When a student requests support, ScanSolve generates a unique link they can share with someone they trust. The recipient can open the link to see the student requesting support and the available subscription plans, then choose a plan and complete the payment on the student's behalf.
This turns the paywall from a simple "pay for yourself" experience into a way for students to involve the people who support their education.

Subscription Cancellation UX
Cancellation shouldn't have to mean goodbye. I designed ScanSolve's cancellation flow to first understand why a student wanted to leave, then use that insight to offer a relevant alternative where possible.
When a student initiated cancellation, they were presented with five reasons:
I am on the wrong plan
I want more features
I found an alternative to ScanSolve
I want to pause for a moment
I can't afford it
Each reason triggered a different experience designed around the student's specific situation.

The result of the subscription cancellation UX was a cancellation experience designed around three goals:
Understand why students leave.
Give them a reason to stay.
Make it easy to come back if they don't.

The Design System

The Design System
I approached the ScanSolve design system with the goal of keeping it concise and purposeful. Rather than creating components for every possible use case, I established the essential UI foundations needed to support the product's core experiences while maintaining consistency as the product evolved.
The system provided a shared visual language across Homework, Tutor, subscriptions, and the rest of the product, while remaining flexible enough to accommodate the unique requirements of AI-powered interactions.
